What kind of background does an ASSOB Consultant need?

ASSOB Consultants usually have a professional or para-professional business and operate their Membership as an adjunct to their existing services. In particular, ASSOB Consultants who are familiar with financial and investment services, or the provision of raising capital, possess a distinct advantage.

Ideally, an ASSOB Consultant would fall into one of the following professional categories:

  • Accountants
  • Finance Brokers
  • Business Brokers
  • Financial Planners
  • Corporate Advisors
  • Lawyers / Solicitors
  • Government Grant Consultants
  • Business Coaches / Consultants / Mentors
  • Bankers (especially small business investment bankers)
  • Other professionals with financial services or investment backgrounds e.g. Venture Capital / Business  Angels / Private Equity

It is preferable for a Consultant to have a skill set in one or more areas listed above, however there are two areas in which it is essential for a Consultant to have in-depth knowledge. Firstly, they should thoroughly understand what is involved in growing a business from the ground up and secondly, be fully aware of the various challenges Australian enterprises face, especially in terms of funding their growth.

What makes for a successful ASSOB Consultant?

ASSOB Consultants are the employees or subcontractors of ASSOB Member organisations. Consultants manage every aspect of the client’s capital raising and growth within a stringent regulatory environment. They facilitate access to the ASSOB platform and play a catalytic role as clients progress through the capital raising process.

High performing ASSOB consultants generally exhibit the following characteristics:

  • Professional
  • Entrepreneurial
  • Strong desire to learn
  • Flexible in their thinking
  • Exceptional people skills
  • Process and outcome driven
  • Passion for building businesses
  • High level management and consulting skills
  • Significant operational business experience
  • Financial services experience (preferably in capital raising)
  • Well established, professional networks in the entrepreneurial, investor, senior executive and professional adviser arenas)

Do you have the foresight to succeed?

Above all, ASSOB consultants need to be able to identify and nurture ‘diamonds in the rough’. These are the companies, that with a bit of polishing, have the potential to deliver significant returns to investors and their stakeholders. A successful ASSOB Consultant needs to possess foresight in order to discover these companies before anyone else. Imagine if you found Google before the investment banks did.
